As we approach the Inaugural Apacheria Gravel event on November 16, 2024, we’re excited to showcase the incredible local talent and community spirit that’s helping to make this event a reality. From stunning handcrafted awards to essential on-course support, the Apacheria Gravel community wouldn’t be the same without the amazing people who are stepping up to contribute.
One of the most exciting aspects of our event is the original artwork that will be awarded to the fastest male and female riders in both the Long and Medium Courses. Thanks to Richard Paun, a native of Douglas and the talented artist behind LaMaRaJi Clay Company, we’ll be giving out unique, handcrafted pieces of art. Richard, who has a long history with the community as an art teacher, is creating four stunning pieces that celebrate the beauty of the Borderlands and the spirit of Apacheria Gravel. His passion for both art and his hometown shines through in every piece he creates, and we couldn’t be more excited to showcase his work at the event.
In addition to the gorgeous clay art, we’re also thrilled to announce that Nikki De La Torre will be hand-painting cowbells for the fastest Latino and Latina riders on the Long and Medium Courses. Nikki, a local artist from Pirtleville, AZ, is bringing a unique touch to these awards with beautiful Borderlands-inspired designs. Not only is Nikki a talented artist, but she also works as the point person at the Border Air Museum, enriching our community with her work. These hand-painted cowbells will not only make a loud statement of achievement but also showcase the vibrant culture of the region.
We’re also excited to announce that Yttzha (Karla) Moreno will be joining us to sing the National Anthems for both USA and Mexico. Yttzha, who we met at the 2024 Douglas Days Festival, will bring a beautiful, emotional moment to the event as she kicks off the race with a heartfelt performance. Her powerful voice will help set the tone for an unforgettable day.
We’re honored to have the Montano Family, owners of Border Mart and longstanding members of the Borderlands community, providing Can-Am/ATVs to support our on-course efforts. With over 27 years of local business experience, the Montano family has deep roots in the community and has graciously stepped up to help us provide essential support during the race. Their involvement embodies the spirit of local collaboration and ensures that the event will run smoothly while showcasing the very best of the Borderlands.
The Boy Scouts of America, led by Scout Master Chuck Chambers, are stepping up in a big way to support our community. The Troop will assist with community service projects, including delivering important event notifications to local residents. This is an especially meaningful contribution, as many scouts are working towards earning their Eagle Scout Awards, and their participation in Apacheria Gravel helps them fulfill this important requirement. Their dedication to service, teamwork, and community is an inspiration, and we are grateful for their help.
We’re thrilled to announce that Tinker Juarez, a two-time Olympian and four-time MTB USA Cycling National Champion, will be contesting the Apacheria Gravel! Tinker is a true icon in the off-road cycling world, and his presence at the event is sure to raise the stakes for all participants. Tinker is making his first trip to the Borderlands of Arizona, and we’re honored to have him join us for this historic event. If you’ve ever dreamed of riding alongside one of the legends of cycling, now is your chance to do just that. Don’t miss your chance to register and race with Tinker – get ready to GYGO!
